The Wilful Child

Once upon a time there was a child who was very stubborn and would not do what her mother said. God was not pleased with her because of this, and so she became ill. No doctor could help her, and soon she lay on her deathbed.

After she was buried and the earth was piled over her, suddenly her arm came out of the grave and reached upward. They pushed it back and covered it with fresh dirt, but it was no use—the arm always came out again.

Then the mother had to go to the grave herself and strike the arm with a rod. When she did that, the arm was pulled in, and at last the child found rest beneath the ground.
