The Maid of Brakel

A girl from Brakel once went to St. Anne's Chapel at the foot of the Hinnenberg. She wanted a husband and thought she was all alone in the chapel, so she sang:

"Oh, holy Saint Anne! Help me soon to a man. You know him so well, by Suttmer gate does he dwell. His hair it is golden, you know him so well."

But the clerk was standing behind the altar and heard her. He cried in a very gruff voice, "You shall not have him! You shall not have him!" The maiden thought it was the little statue of the Virgin Mary standing by her mother Anne who had called out to her. She got angry and cried, "No, you stuck-up thing, hold your tongue and let your mother speak!"
